Electromagnetic Wave

The document discusses electromagnetic waves, which are transverse waves that travel at the speed of light and result from accelerating electric charges. The electromagnetic spectrum ranges from radio waves to gamma rays and includes visible light. Electromagnetic waves can transfer energy, travel through a vacuum, and exhibit properties like reflection, refraction, interference and diffraction. The different types of electromagnetic waves, including radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays, have varying energies, frequencies, common uses, and health effects.

Electromagnetic wave is the radiation consisting of waves of energy associated with electric and magnetic fields resulting from

m the acceleration of an electric charge

station of radiation use electromagnetic waves where electromagnetic waves aretransverse waves that travel at the speed of light, c.

The electromagnetic spectrum is the range of frequencies or wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation

Including: 1)Radio waves 2)Microwaves 3)Infrared 4)Visible light 5)Ultraviolet 6)X-rays and 7)Gamma rays

The spectrum with longwavelength is radiowaves (more than 10nm) andGamma rays is the shortest wavelength (less than 0.01nm)

Properties of electromagnetic wave:

They can transfer energy from one point to another. They are transverse wave They can travel through vacuum They travel at the same speed of the light They can be polarised They all show reflection, refraction, interference and diffraction

Types of electromagnetic waves

Radio waves
-low energy -lowest frequency -includes radar n television signals -dangers= none

Microwaves
Low energy Second low frequency Common uses = telecommunications, radar, microwaves Dangerous = can kill healthy cells, can affect people with pacemakers

Infrared radiation

Low energy Common uses = heat lamps, night vision goggles Dangers- over exposure can cause burns

Ultraviolet Waves (UV light)

High energy, short wavelength, high frequency Common uses- sterilize medical equipment, helps skins produce vitamin D Dangers- cause skin cancer, can burn

X-rays
High energy, short wavelength, high frequency Blocked by high densities subtances Common uses medical, kill cancer cells, inspect baggage Dangers- kills healthy cells

Gamma Rays
High energy, short wavelength, high frequency Blocked by lead or concrete Uses astronomy researches Dangers can damage healthy tissues

Visible light (red, yellow, green, blue, orange, violet)
