CLASS TEST

Time: 50 minutes

ARBA/ARYA/MR/01/2013
Full Marks:25

1. Answer the following questions (a) The resolution limit of eye is 1 minute. At a distance of r from the eye, two persons stand with a lateral separation of 3 metre. For the two persons to be just resolved by the naked eye, r should be (a) 10 km (b) 15 km (c) 20 km (d) 30 km (b) The focal lengths of the lenses of an astronomical telescope are 50 cm and 5 cm. The length of the telescope when the image is formed at the least distance of distinct vision is (a) 45 cm (b) 55 cm (c) 275/6 cm (d) 325/6 cm (c) A convex mirror of focal length f forms an image which is 1/n times the object. The magnitude of the distance of the object from the mirror is (a) (n-1)f (b) (n-1)f/n (c) (n+1)f/n (d) (n+1)f (d) A thin rod of length f / 3 lies along the axis of a concave mirror of focal length f. One end of its magnified image touches an end of the rod. The length of the image is (a) f (b)f/2 (c) 2 f (d) f/4 (e) A double convex lens made of a material of refractive index 1.5 and having a focal length of 10 cm is immersed in liquid of refractive index 3.0. The lens will behave as (a)Diverging lens of focal length 10 cm (b) Diverging lens of focal length 10 / 3 cm (c) Converging lens of focal length 10 / 3 cm (d) Converging lens of focal length 30 cm 2. Derive an expression for the magnifying power of an astronomical telescope when the final image is formed at LDDV. 2 3. Draw a neat diagram of a reflecting telescope. 2

4. If an eye produces too much convergence in the incident beam, what is the defect of the eye? For an eye with correcting lens -1.5 D, where is the far point located? 2 5. Complete the following ray diagram (Prism angle= 90o, ) 2

6. An equilateral glass prism of r.i. 1.5 is immersed in water of r.i. 1.33. If a ray of light is incident at an angle of 30o, shall there be an emergent ray? 2 7. A ray of light is incident normally on one face of an equilateral prism of r.i. 1.5. Calculate the angle of deviation. (Note that the prism is not small angled) 2 8. State how multiple TIR takes place in an optical fibre. 9. For refraction from denser to rarer surface, derive the relation 2 4
