Lecture 4

The document discusses strain energy and the energy method for analyzing statically indeterminate systems. It introduces key definitions of energy and work done by forces. It notes that stress and strain occur simultaneously as external loads and elongations gradually increase. The example problem uses the energy method to find the displacement at the tip of a bar under a single force by equating the strain energy stored in the bar to the work done by the external force. It provides the equations used and notes the formula for strain energy in a two-force member bar.

Strain Energy and Energy Method

Definitions: 1. Energy is defined as the capacity to do work, and 2. The work done by a force is defined as the dot product between the force and the displacement that the force moves.

Dilemma: Chicken first or Egg first ?

1. Stress and strain happen simultaneously, and 2. External load and elongation gradually increase to their final values

Example 1: Find the displacement at tip of the bar
