Saint-Venant Principle: Shaofan Li

The document discusses the Saint-Venant principle, which states that the effects of force application on stresses is important only in the vicinity of where the force is applied, and the effects become negligible at points farther away. It provides background on the principle, named after the French mathematician and mechanician Saint-Venant, and mentions the principle will be explored through finite element simulation and analyzing end effects.

How accurate is theory of Bar ?

The theory of bar is a theory of internal force, or stress resultant. It neglects many details. Such as shear stress and shear deformations. It also assumes that stress distribution is uniform over the cross section of the bar. Is this accurate ? If it is not 100 % accurate, is it a good approximation ? How much confidence do we have on such theory ?

Saint-Venant Principle

Under the statically equivalent traction boundary conditions, The effects on the stress distribution in the body are negligible at the points where is far away from the traction boundary. Timoshenko The effects of force application on stresses is important only in the vicinity of the region where the force is applied.
