Common Core/ NM Content Standards: Reading Standards for Literature Grades 9-10: Craft and Structure determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text, analyze how an authors choices concerning how to .manipulate time (flashbacks) creates an effect, analyze a particular point of view is reflected in the text. Reading standards for Informational Texts: Key Ideas and Details - determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in the text. identify what the text says explicitly as well as implicitly, determine central ideas and supporting details. Writing Standards for 9-10: introduce a topic, organize ideas, develop the topic, provide a concluding statement, use narrative techniques such as dialogue and pacing to develop plot and character.

Essential Question(s): What are important strategies for analyzing fiction and nonfiction texts.

Resources/Materials Teacher: Kite Runner Articles about Refugees

Students: Assessment (How will you monitor progress and know students have successfully met outcomes?) Daily: Do Now checks for understanding of the previous days lesson. Written assignments and quizzes check for understanding of daily lessons. This Week: Simulation of Amirs trial about the theme of guilt or innocence, papers handed in by all students about the views regarding Amirs guilt or innocence. Unit:

Time allotted MONDAY Learning Target- Students will analyze a theme concerning guilt and innocence in the Kite Runner by simulating a trial that deals with the theme.

Lesson activities for instructor and students Assignment(s) Due- Students finish up closing arguments. Students will turn in written portion of the trial.

Students will examine the concept of refugees in the Kite Runner by reading case studies and answering questions, and by reading about how Amir and his father become refugees.

Students will read case studies about Afghani refugees and answer questions Class will read Chapter10.

TUESDAY Learning Target- Students will compare and contrast Amir and Babas reaction to fleeing Afghanistan by writing a short essay.

Assignment(s) Due- Essay due on Wednesday. Students will compare and contrast the response of Amir and Baba on fleeing their country first in a graphic organizer, then in an essay. Class will read Chapter 11.

WEDNESDAY Learning Target- Students will evaluate one anothers work by peer editing essays.

Assignment(s) Due- Test on 9,10 and 11 Students will peer edit papers using a checklist. Read Chapter 12.

THURSDAY Learning Target- Students will analyze character change by writing a narrative that explores the internal and external factors causing the main characters to change.

Assignment(s) DueStudents write about how being refugees in America helps them make positive changes. What are the forces helping them improve their relationship with each other and to the world around them. Read Chapter 13

FRIDAY Learning Target- Students will explore symbolism by writing about why Amir cannot have children for unexplained reasons.

Assignment(s) DueRead Chapter 14. Write an essay exploring symbolism.
