Stair Calculator

This document provides instructions for using an online stair riser calculator to design residential stairs that meet local building codes. It notes that the user should know their local code requirements for maximum and minimum stair rise heights and tread depths before using the calculator. The calculator then allows the user to input total height needed, code requirements, and calculates the optimal number of risers, riser height, tread depth, and checks that the design meets code standards. A sample calculation is shown to demonstrate the output and checks performed.

Stair Riser Calculator

http://www.homeconstructionimprovement.com Notes: Before you begin you'll need to gather some imformation from your local building officials. You will need to know what the code requirements for rise and run of stairs are in your location. The example numbers contained in this spreadsheet are only an example. You must know what code requirements must be met in your location. First Calculation of number of risers = Actual rounded number of risers = Actual Riser Height Needed = Code Check Riser Height Within Allowables = 7.74 inches 8 risers 7.50 inches OK Run Tread Depth (with min. overhang) 10.75 Tread Depth (with max. overhang) 11.25 Note: If the code run is 10", a 5/4 x 12 works well at 11.25" Rise Run Rise

Stair Design Summary Run = Rise = Number of Risers = 10.00 inches 7.50 inches 8 risers
