MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for 3 days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. I hypothesized that the water will flow into the egg because the percentage of water in an egg is 74% but the percentage of water in the vinegar is 95%. Because the amount of water is greater in the vinegar it will flow into the egg to balance out the amount of water. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 13.4 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 OBSERVATIONS Bubbles on egg shell The water displaced 50(ml) when the egg was added to the vinegar (water) mixture the egg shell is gone, it has disintegrated it is squishy it is a dark mucus color it is bigger all of the eggs expanded Egg is a lot bigger Water is yellow Swishier

CONCLUSION In this lab we investigated osmosis. We put an egg inside a cup of vinegar, and after 4 days the water molecules flowed from an area of high concentration, through a selectively permeable membrane, and to an area of low concentration. I had hypothesized that the water would flow from the water to the egg because the percentage of water in an egg is 74% but the percentage of water in the vinegar is 95%, my hypothesis was correct. After 4 days our egg ha expanded 2.8cm. Compared to the entire 7th grade, our egg expanded 0.1cm more. ANALYSIS: 1. What caused the eggshell to dissolve? The eggshell which is calcium carbonate dissolved because when the vinegar which is a week acid went through the permeable membrane the two chemicals had a reaction causing the egg shell to dissolve.

2. Period 7 Group 3s egg expanded by 4.5 cm after 4 days, compared to Group 7, which expanded 1.1 cm. Compare the results of these two groups. What was the difference in expansion? What was the rate (distance/time) of expansion in 4 days? Explain the discrepancy in data. Why did these groups get different results?

GROUP # 3 7

PERIOD 7 TOTAL EXPANSION IN 4 DAYS 4.5 cm 1.1 cm

Group 3 expanded 4.5cm, which is 3.4cm more than group 7s expansion of 1.1cm. Over 4 days, group 3 probably expanded 1.125cm a day, and group 7 probably expanded 0.275cm a day. These groups probably got different data because they had eggs with different sized yolks. The yolk only contains about 5% of the eggs water, so if the yolk were really big, the egg would expand a lot. 3. Why do cells need water? Cells need water so they can make chemical reactions and - (Intake of) water maintains the osmotic pressure inside a cell. - Water is used to dissolve most chemicals the cell needs to function (no fatty acids) - Water is used in transportation of food and waste. - (The polarity of water molecules (H2+O-) is used as a catalyst in some processes.)
