Region Informative Writing Project

Essential Question: What makes a region? Enduring Understanding: Physical geography dictates human geography Introduction: We will begin our first Informative Writing project this week. We are writing to inform the reader about the regions of the United States. There should be no argumentative or opinion type of statements in your work. There just needs to be the facts that you have researched or learned over time. We are asking you to list your sources that you specifically use in your paper. You may see the following rubrics to clarification. Our Social Studies focus is going to be on the different regions in the United States. Regions are usually, but not always, defined by the physical characteristics that an area has. This includes the different types of resources within that region. There can be regions within regions as well. For example Maryland is in the Northeast region of the United States, but it also has three different regions within it: Piedmont, Atlantic Coastal Plain, Appalachian. Directions: 1-You will either select a region or have it selected for you. Region______________________________ 2-List your group members or find out who has the same region as yourself: _____________________________________________________________________________________ 3-You need to research what characteristics define that region. You need to take notes on this while listing the sources that you have used. Please make note if they are a website, book, magazine, etc 4- Organize your research into an Outline form, which will then help you write your paper. Questions that you will guide your outline for your paper are: -What makes a region? -How do we group regions? -What states belong in this region? -What are the characteristics that define this region? -How is your state similar to other locations within this region? -What would you want to share about your region? -What resources are abundant within your region? ALL of these questions must be addressed in the outline and then the paper. 5-Make note of any pertinent information that helps define that region. 6-Based on your research make a list of certain vocabulary that you should use and use appropriately in your writing. If you are unsure on what the words mean then use your context clues skills and resources to help find the correct definition. 7-Write a rough draft that incorporates the elements listed above. 8-Get your rough draft peer edited. 9-Make a final copy of your paper. 10- Text features must be included in your final copy. These text features must add meaning to your writing.
