Modeling Osmosis
Modeling Osmosis
MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar? HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar and water and left for four days, then the
water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane to an area of lower concentration, causing the egg to expand.
THEORY:
Osmosis is when the water molecules travel from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration through a selectively permeable membrane. The water will go through the membrane into the egg because 90% of vinegar is water, making it the area of higher concentration. The egg is only 74% water so it is the area of lower concentration. Osmosis states that the water will go from high concentration to low concentration, so in this case, it will go from the vinegar into the egg. Before this can happen, the acetic acid in the vinegar will have to dissolve the eggshell, making the selectively permeable membrane accessible for the water molecules to travel through. Now the water molecules can travel into the egg, and complete the process of osmosis.
PROCEDURE:
1. 2. 3. 4. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. Record observations. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations.

CONCLUSION
In this lab we were modeling osmosis by leaving an egg in vinegar for four days. The water molecules in the vinegar (the higher concentration) traveled across the selectively permeable membrane to the inside of egg (the lower concentration). Because of this process our egg expanded a total of 3.4 cm, whereas the 7th grade average is only 2.7 cm. My hypothesis stated that the water would travel from the vinegar to the egg. My hypothesis was correct.
ANALYSIS
Before osmosis could happen, the eggshell needed to be removed. Acetic acid in the vinegar dissolved the calcium carbonate (eggshell). After this, the water molecules could flow in the selectively permeable membrane, and expand the egg. Each egg expanded differently, and in 7th period, one groups total expansion was 4.5, and another group was 1.1. The eggs difference is 3.4 cm. The first egg expanded 1 and 1/8 cm each day to expand 4.5 cm. the second egg only expanded 11/40 of an inch every day. This probably happened because of inconsistency of measuring, or the different sizes of eggs. If one egg started out big already, it would make sense that it would not expand a huge amount. Osmosis is important because cells need water. Water regulates body temperature, moves fluids, gives cells shape, dissolves chemicals, and chemical reactions take place in the presence of water.
