Topic: choose a topic that allows for different interpretations and controversy Specify learning objectives, 3 types: Students should think deeply and analytically Students should exercise critical thinking skills Students should develop social skills Before the discussion, build up student knowledge of the topic through previous instruction Keep the discussion organized by providing structure and framework.
Use and attention grabber to introduce the topic Exploration: allow students to explore the topic by picking a stance and defending it. Monitor discussion Closure: end the discussion with a summary of the views discussed and why it matters to previous lessons and material that will be covered in the future.
Assess content and critical thinking through traditional methods such as essays. Have students provide evidence from the novel. Assess social development by systematic observation (specifying criteria for acceptable performance and taking notes based on the criteria). Give students feedback on their participation.
Motivate the student by making the topic interesting with an attention getter Help the students to succeed because success is essential for motivation Encourage involvement between the students because it can help meet the basic needs in students such as the need to appear smart and competent and to be connected.
Discussion debate is a learning strategy that motivates students though student-student interaction, and is effective in teaching students social skills, differing views on a topic and critical thinking skills through listening and communicating with each other in debate.
