The United Nations was created at the San Francisco Conference in 1945 to succeed the League of Nations. It is governed by a Charter that came into force in 1945. Originally with 51 members, the UN has grown to include most states in the world. The principal purposes of the UN are to maintain international peace and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve international cooperation, promote human rights, and be a center for harmonizing actions toward common goals. The principles of the UN are that all members are equal and committed to fulfilling obligations, settling disputes peacefully, refraining from threats or use of force, and refraining from assisting states against which the UN is taking action.
