Securitization is the process of packaging loans and receivables into financial instruments that can be sold to investors, allowing the originating institution to liquidate those assets. The key players in securitization are the obligor, originator, special purpose vehicle, credit rating agency, underwriter, investors, agent and trustee, and enhancer/insurer/guarantor. The originator transfers the assets to a special purpose vehicle which then issues securities to investors with the backing of credit ratings and guarantees.
