Properties

Distributive property: The distributive property is when you take the number outside of the parentheses and you distribute it into the numbers in the parentheses. 6(n+4) Associative Property of Addition/multiplication: The associative property of addition is when you switch the numbers and signs in the parentheses. 4+6(2+5) Commutative Property of Addition/Multiplication: Change the order of addends or factors does not change the sum or product. Add. 5+7=7+5 Mult. 7 x 5=5 x 7

Simplifying Expressions
II

4(7x-3) + 2x Use the distributive property rst 4(7x-3) + 2x=28x-12 + 2x. After distributing, you have to combine like terms which would give you 30x-12. This is the simplied answer.

Solving Equations
III

7x-10-9x=-13 What you have to do to solve this equation is rst off combine like terms, so it would be -2x-10=-13. After you have done this step you are left with a two step equation which then you have to add 10 to -13 because you do the opposite of whatever operation. This would leave you with -2x=-3. Finally you divide -2 by -3 leaving you with x=1.5

Solving Equations
Work:
IV

To solve this problem you rst have to get rid of the denominators by nding one number that each denominator goes into, in this instance that number is 6. Next you nd how much each number goes into 6 so you start with 5x over 6, 6 goes into 6 1 time and 1 x 5x is 5x. Next you do the second fraction which is x over 3, so you see how many times 3 goes into 6, so its 2 and 2 x X is 2x. The next fraction is 1/2 so you nd how many times 2 goes into 6, which is 3 times and 3 x 1 is 3. Finally we move onto the other side of the equal sign and simplify the fraction 11 over 6, so you nd how many times 6 goes into 6 which is 1 and 11 x 1 is 11. We are now left with 5x+2x-3=11, which is a two step equation. So to solve this, you have to rst combine like terms 5x and 3x so 7x. 7x-3=11. Then you have to get rid of the three by adding it to 11 leaving you with 7x=14. Get rid of 7x by dividing by 7 on each side so 14/7 is 2. x=2

Solving Inequalities
Work:
V

To graph the inequality 2! x over -5 you have to start by multiplying by -5 to 2. Before you do anything you have to ip the sign because you are multiplying by a negative. This leaves you with -10 is greater than or equal to x. To graph this you put -10 on a number line and 0 on the same number line and above the negative 10 you put a closed circle since it is less than or equal to -10. Also you have to put the arrow facing down since -10 is part of the solution set and all of the numbers less than are not.

Solving Inequalities
VI

To solve the inequality -4x+4"-8 you have to start off by subtracting 4 from each side so 4- -8 is -12. Now you are left with -4x"-12. Next you have to divide negative 4 by -12 twelve leaving you with x!3. I had to switch the sign because whenever you multiply or divide a negative you have to switch the sign.

Open circle and closed circle

VII

An open circle means that whatever number on the number line that it is above is not part of the solution set. It also means that the number is either greater than or equal to If a circle is closed then it means that the number that it is above on the number line is part of the solution set. It also means that the number is either a greater than or equal to or less than or equal to.

Inequality word problems

VIII
1. 12x!160 The fewest number of weeks she must save in order to buy the bicycle is 13.33 weeks. 13.33

2. 1/3x<25 His brother spent 8 minutes on his math homework. x<8.3 repeating

3.1/3x"58 The number is x"19.3. First you have to divide 1/3 by 58 which gets you to 19.3. I did this because you have to do the opposite of multiply.

19.3
