EC2

This document contains an extra credit assignment with 4 questions related to heat transfer and fluid mechanics. Question 1 involves calculating the friction coefficient and heat transfer coefficient for air flowing over a plate. Question 2 asks for the surface temperature of an electrical wire during windy conditions. Question 3 requires calculating the heat transfer rate for water flowing over a plate. Question 4 involves determining the maximum power rating of electronic devices in an air duct given temperature and flow constraints.

ABE 3612C Extra Credit 2 Due Monday 11-14-2012

Question 1 (Answers: a) 0.00299; b) 89.5 W/(mK); c) 89.5 W/(mK)) Air at 1 atm and 20C is flowing over the top surface of a 0.5-m long thin flat plate. The air stream velocity is 50 m/s and the plate is maintained at a constant surface temperature of 180C. Determine (a) the average friction coefficient, (b) the average convection heat transfer coefficient, and (c) repeat part (b) using the modified Reynolds analogy. Question 2 (Answer: 11.8C) A 5-mm-diameter electrical transmission line carries an electric current of 50 A and has a resistance of 0.002 ohm per meter length. Determine the surface temperature of the wire during a windy day when the air temperature is 10C and the wind is blowing across the transmission line at 50 km/h. Assume T f = 10C.

Question 3 (Answer: 13925 W/m) Water at 43.3 flows over a large plate at a velocity of 30.0 m/s. The plate is 1.0 m long (in the flow direction), and its surface is maintained at a uniform temperature of 10.0C. Calculate the steady rate of heat transfer per unit width of the plate.#

Question 4 (Answer: 640 W) The components of an electronic system are located in a 1.5-m-long horizontal duct whose cross section is 20 cm X 20 cm. The components in the duct are not allowed to come into direct contact with cooling air, and thus are cooled by air at 30C flowing over the duct with a velocity of 200 m/min. If the surface temperature of the duct is not to exceed 65C, determine the total power rating of the electronic devices that can be mounted into the duct.
