11-14

graphing absolute value

Be prepared to explain what happens on the graph when you
add / subtract / multiply / divide outside of the absolute value bars.

11-15

graphing absolute value

How do linear equations and absolute value equations relate? Graph.
y = x, y = | x |
y = x + 4, y = | x + 4 |, y = | x | + 4
. . . and a few more.
Look over the words for "We gather together . . . "
Try and write an equation for:
4, 11, 18, 25, . . .
2, 4, 8, 16, . . .

11-18

On a graph, draw a vertical line and a horizontal line. On each line place two points.
Using the slope equation, find the slope of each line.

11-19

linear equations
Complete the work from class:
Make up a linear equation, t-chart, 2 coordinate pairs, and a graph.
From the one you have made up, go directly to the other three.

11-20

linear equations
Examples:
y = -1/4 x + 4/5 get rid of fractions - multiply every term by the denominators
20y = -5x + 14 get rid of -5x - combine with opposite operations to both sides
5x + 20y = 14
4x - 6y = 10
get rid of 4x - opposite operation to both sides (subtract 4x)
- 6y = -4x + 10 get rid of -6 - opposite operation to both sides (divide -6)
-6y/-6 = -4x/-6 + 10/-6
y = 2/3 x - 5/3
p312 7-15 odd
p326 31-35 odd
If you have a see-saw, what is the weight on the right side?

11-21

linear equations
Thinking through inverse variation (when x increases, y decreases) graph an
example of it when x is positive and negative. You will probably need 10
positive and 10 negative x values to get a sense of the graph.
Draw parallel lines on one graph and perpendicular lines on another.
Determine the equations of each line and consider the similarities and differences
between the pairs of lines / equations.

y = -2| x |
Draw two perpendicular lines on one graph.
