Direct Instruction Lesson Plan Analysis 1
Direct Instruction Lesson Plan Analysis 1
it creatively teaches a subject that many students find boring in a fun way. This lesson covers suffixes, prefixes, and roots, and teaches students how to infer the definition of the word based on those elements. Another strength of this lesson is that it has a fun concept video to introduce the topic. Over all, this is a very strong lesson. The aspects of this lesson plan that connect to the direct instruction model are: content, learning objectives, procedures, implementation, and assessment. The content of this lesson plan, identifying suffixes, prefixes, and roots, is a procedural skill, which is best taught using the direct instruction model. The learning objectives of this lesson are for the students to be able to: identify prefixes, roots, and suffixes, analyze word parts to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words, and to explain the development process in defining unfamiliar words. This lesson plan also closely follows the direction instruction model in implementing the lesson. First, the teacher introduces the lesson with the concept video. Then the teacher presents the new skill. Next, the teacher gives the students assignments for guided and independent practice. An alteration that the teacher makes to the direct instruction model, is that she has the students present their work to the class. The assessment piece of this lesson plan measures how well the students can identify prefixes, suffixes, and roots, construct definitions of unfamiliar words, and explain the process. If I was going to use this lesson plan I would not tweak it very much because I think that it is very strong. I really like how the teacher has the students use different colors to write down the prefix, suffix, and roots of the words.
