!O".
1.PREPARATION OF SO2: !O2 is obtained by burning sulphur. S + O2 SO2 2.PURIFICATION OF SO2. !O2 contains a number of impurities such as dust particles, #rsenous o$ide, vapours, sulphur etc. %hese impurities must be removed otherwise catalyst loses its efficiency &catalyst poisoning'.
SULPHURIC ACID
DUST CHAMBER: !O2 is first passed through the dust chamber where steam is spread over the gas to remove dust particles, which settle down. Fe&O '( also sprayed over to remove o$ides of #rsenic. WASHING TOWER: !O2 is then passed through a washing tower after cooling. ere it is sprayed by water to remove any other soluble impurities. DRYING TOWER: %he gas is now dried by passing through drying tower where conc. 2!O" &dehydrating agent' is sprayed. 2!O" removes moisture from !O2. 3. OXIDATION OF SO2. CONTACT TOWER: O$idation of !O2 is carried out in contact tower where )2O* is filled in different pipes. !O2 here reacts with air &O2' to produce !O(. +nder above conditions ,-. !O2 is converted into !O(. 2SO2 + O2 2SO3 + 45K !" CONDITIONS NECESSARY FOR MAXIMUM YIELD OF SO3: O$idation of !O2 is a reversible and e$othermic process in which volume of product is less than the volumes of reactants. /n order to obtain ma$imum amount of !O(, according to Le0 Chatelier1s 2rinciple following conditions are necessary. CONCENTRATION: 3$cess of O2. TEMPEATURE: # decrease in temperature favours reaction in forward direction. Optimum temperature for this process is "*4oC to *44oC. PRESSURE: !ince volumes of reactants are greater than the product &(52', therefore, according to Le0Chatelier1s 2rinciple a high pressure is favourable. Optimum pressure is about 1.* to 1.6 atmosphere. USE OF CATALYST: #t low temperature, rate of reaction decreases. %o increase rate of reaction a catalyst vanadium pentao$ide &)2O*' is used. 4.ABSORPTION OF SO3. !O( is not directly passed in water, because a dense fog of minute particles of 2!O" is produced. /t is therefore, dissolved in conc. 2!O" to form pyrosulphuric acid &oleum'. SO3 + H2SO4 H2S2O# $OLEUM% 5.DILUTION OF OLEUM: Oleum is now diluted with water to form concentration. H2S2O# + H2O 2H2SO4
