GRADE/SUBJECT AREA: Grades 1&2 -Literacy TIME FRAME: Full period, 50 minutes

PURPOSE: What is the central message of the story Frog and Toad, Dragons and Giants? How can the main events of Frog and Toad, Dragons and Giants be used to retell the story? SKILLS: - Students will identify the central message of a story. - Students will retell a story. - Students will identify the story elements of a story OBJECTIVES: - Students will be able to understand the central message of a story is often about how characters relate to one another. - Students will be able to retell a story by ordering the main events of a story sequentially. - Students will be able to use story elements to enhance the retelling of a story.

COMMONCORE LEARNING STANDARDS: First Grade -English Language Arts Reading Standards for Literature: RL.1.1 Ask and answer questions about key details in a text. RL.1.2 Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central message or lesson. RL.1.3 Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details. RL.1.7 Use illustrations and details in a story to describe its characters, setting, or events. Speaking and Listening: Comprehension and Collaboration SL.1.1 Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. SL.1.1a Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the topics and texts under discussion). SL.1.1b Build on others talk in conversations by responding to the comments of others through multiple exchanges. PRE-ASSESSMENT: Since the beginning of the month students have been using the Ready Gen curriculum to complete Unit 1 Module A. Students have been studying Stellaluna and Frog and Toad: Dragons and Giants. Students have been studying the story elements of a text. Previously in the unit, students studied characters, setting, and the main events of both texts. Based on their success with these topics students will finish working with Frog and Toad: Dragons and Giants by studying the end of the story and then sequencing the events of the story.

LESSON PRESENTATION: A. SET INDUCTION- The teacher will begin the lesson by calling the students to the rug. Once the students are settled and quiet, the teacher will direct their attention to the story Frog and Toad: Dragons and Giants. The students will then be asked, what do you remember about the story? B. PROCEDUREa. The teacher will first focus on the question, what do you remember from the story Frog and Toad: Dragons and Giants? The teacher will then allow several students to respond. As the students give answers the teacher will probe them with follow up questions regarding the story. The teacher will expect answers in which students identify the characters, the setting, and the main events of the story. b. After the students provide the teacher with the answers to the question the teacher will focus on the ending of the story. The teacher will specifically focus on how the characters (Frog and Toad) relate to one another at the end of the story. c. After the teacher and students have had a classroom discussion the teacher will ask the students to pay close attention while she reads a few pages from the story. The teacher will ask the students to pay close attention to the end of the story and how the characters relate to one another. The teacher will then read pages 13 15 (the end of the story) to the class.

d. After the teacher has completed the close reading the teacher will lead a class discussion. To begin the discussion the teacher will ask the students to tell her about what she just read. Within the classroom discussion the teacher will ask the students several questions regarding the end of the story. These questions will include: - What does Toad do when they get to his house after running down the mountain? - What words tell you that frog and toad like each other? - Are frog and toad really brave? How can you tell? - Why do you think they call each other brave? e. After the class has had a discussion about the end of the story the teacher will then gear the discussion to focus on the central message of the story. The teacher will ask several questions regarding the central message of the story. These questions will include: - How do Frog and Toad act towards each other? - How do Frog and Toad feel about each other? - What lesson is the story teaching about friends? f. The teacher will then ask the students to retell the story. Following the classs retell the teacher will redirect the classs focus to the Smartboard. Using the Smartboard the class will sequence the events of the story. g. Using the images on the Smartboard students will be invited up to move the pictures into sequential order to retell the events of the story. After completing the activity students will return to their seats to complete a differentiated activity. Low group These students will retell the story by sequencing pictures of the main events similarly to how the class did it on the board. Middle group These students will retell the story by sequencing pictures and simple sentences of the storys main events. High group These students will retell tell story by sequencing pictures and writing their own sentences about the storys main events. CLOSURE- As the students complete the activity they will be separated into the three groups by tables. The teacher will begin by working with the low group and

monitor the rest of the students as they work offering assistance to those who may need it. The students will be given ten minutes on a timer to complete the activity. When the timer goes off students will return to the rug to share their work. MATERIALS AND RESOURCES: Easel Dry Erase markers/erasers Differentiated Worksheets: Low Group(3) Picture Sequencing Middle Group(5) Picture/ Simple Sentences Sequencing High Group(4) Picture/Writing Sentences Sequencing # 2 Pencils with erasers Computer / Smart Board Ready Gen: Frog and Toad, Dragons and Giants

FOLLOW- UP ACTIVITY: Students will retell the story at the beginning of the following days reading lesson. Students will continue to work on sequencing and retelling the main events of a story with the future stories they read. Students will also continue to identify the central messages of other stories.

EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT: The teacher will use the worksheets the students completed during independent work as the assessment. For those students who fail to complete the worksheet correctly the teacher will provide them with extra instruction.

DIFFERENTIATED: -For Advanced Students: These students will be given a higher leveled worksheet in which they will be required to write their own sequencing sentences to retell the main events of the story. -For Struggling Students: For those students who are struggling the teacher will provide them with a lower leveled worksheet. This worksheet will contain just pictures. Students will order these pictures into the correct sequence to retell the main events of the story.

-For Visually Impaired Students: The pictures will be presented on the board. For those students with visual impairments the pictures and sentences will be enlarged on the computer. - For Kinesthetic Students: Students will have the opportunity to come up to the Smartboard to sequence the main events of the story. -For Interpersonal Students: Students will be working together in a group to complete the reading and discussion. -For Intrapersonal Students: Students will individually complete the assignment at their seats.
