Single Replacement Reactions Lab Reaction that DIDN'T occur: Copper and Magnesium Nitrate did not react

Cu(s) + Mg(NO3)2 (aq) No reaction

Kirk Lam 15/11/13

Explanation: A reaction did not occur because according to the activity series for elements, Copper is less reactive than Magnesium. Therefore, a reaction will not occur. If Copper was more reactive than Magnesium, only then would a reaction occur. Reaction that DID occur: Magnesium and Zinc Sulfate reacted Mg(s) + ZnSO4 (aq) Zn(s) + MgSO4 (aq) Explanation: A reaction did occur because Magnesium is more reactive than Zinc, as seen in the activity series table. Because of Magnesium being more reactive, a reaction than occurred. Question 6: Net Ionic Equation: Mg(s) + Zn2+(aq) Zn(s) + Mg2+(aq) Question 7: Oxidized/Reducing Agent: Mg(s) Reduced/Oxidizing Agent: Zn2+(aq) Question 8: Metal placed in Hydrochloric Acid reaction occurred, therefore metal must be above Hydrogen in activity series. Metal placed in Calcium Nitrate reaction didn't occur, therefore metal is below Calcium in activity series. Metal placed in Zinc Chloride reaction occurred, therefore metal is above Zinc in activity series. Possibilities: Sodium, Magnesium, Aluminium To figure out which of the three the unknown metal is, I first react the metal with Aluminium Nitrate. If no reaction occurs, then the unknown metal is Aluminium. If a reaction occurs, then I need to do a further test: I will react the unknown metal with Magnesium Nitrate. If a reaction doesn't occur with Magnesium Nitrate, then the unknown is Magnesium. If a reaction does occur, then the unknown metal is Sodium. In summary, if the unknown metal doesn't reaction with Aluminium Nitrate, then the metal is Aluminium, if the unknown metal does react with Aluminium Nitrate, but not with Magnesium Nitrate, then the metal is Magnesium, and if the unknown metal does react with both Alumnium Nitrate and Magnesium Nitrate, then the metal is Sodium.
