Digital Unit Plan Template Unit Title: Solving Systems of Equations Content Area: Mathematics- Algebra

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s): 1. Prove that, given a system of two equations in two variables, replacing one equation by the sum of that equation and a multiple of the other produces a system with the same solutions. 2. Solve systems of linear equations exactly and approximately (e.g., with graphs), focusing on pairs of linear equations in two variables. 3. Solve a simple system consisting of a linear equation and a quadratic equation in two variables algebraically and graphically Big Ideas: Students will be able to use properties of lines and equations of lines to analyze the graphs drawn from the equations to solve the systems. Students will be able to look at a graph and be able to tell if the linear system has one solution, no solution, or infinitely many solutions. Students will be able to solve systems using various methods while still maintaining an organized structure. Students will be able to incorporate quadratic equations with linear equations and be able to solve the system using graphing and substitution. Unit Goals and Objectives: Students are able to solve systems of equations by multiplying and adding them to eliminate variables using the elimination method. They will do this through an online webercise and other examples. Students will learn to solve equations by substitution. This will also be done example problems and an online quiz. Students will use graphs to solve these equations. They will plot points on a graph and display them on graphing calculators then create a poster with a real life example they create. Students will learn how to solve a system consisting of one linear equation and one quadratic equation by exploring the web and creating a graphic organizer putting all the information together. Unit Summary: In this unit, we will learn how to solve systems of equations in three different ways. Using what we already know about lines and the equations of lines, first we will look at how to graph equations and find the solutions of systems graphically. I will even show students how to use their graphing calculators to find this as well. Secondly, we will find out how to use substitution to get the variables by themselves to solve the system. Thirdly, we will look at how to use elimination to eliminate the variables to solve the system. We will be able to complete the problems in a legible and organized manner, and even be able to apply what we've learned to create posters with real life examples students come up with. Once we have a full grasp of all this information, you will be given the chance to organize it all together in a graphic organizer. In this graphic organizer, we will also take a look at solving systems with one linear equation and one quadratic equation. We will be able to solve these using the methods we learned earlier. Assessment Plan: Entry-Level: Discussion-How to graph lines Formative: Game- Matching terms Quiz- Solving systems by Graphing and Substitution Game- See who can solve the quickest Activity- Webercise on elimination method Discussion-What would be the best method to use in different cases? Summative: Project- Graphing real life examples (poster) Project- Graphic organizer Test-Covering all material
