University Reforms

Outlines for the University Reforms

University Reforms. Written by Dr. Sohail Mahmood. Dawn News, October, 9, 2010. I choose this topic because this one of the hottest issues now a days in Pakistan and it needs our attention. This article covers the following main points. Recent protest by university teachers. Short of teachers and students in the universities. Trained human resources. Structural problems. This is one of the most important issues in Pakistan. Now we cannot lax anymore. Quality of education is more important than the quantity of the students. There were only 59 universities in Pakistan in 2001 but ExPresident Perwaiz Musharaf increased it to 132 till 2009. There were only 176 PHDs in Pakistan in 2000 but it increased to 624 in 2009. Govt. should provide money and funding to the universities to resolve all their personal matters. Current Govt. promise to allocate four percent of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) to education sector in the next budget. Current allocation is less than two percent. The current year budget of the Higher Education Sector is only Rs.15.5bn. During last financial year Govt. released only Rs.11.5bn against the commitment of Rs.22.5bn and Higher Education Sector is still demanding Rs.7bn. Pakistan government spent a lot in developing military strong but now its time for the education sector.

Management of the universities must be improved and checked by the Government. There are no reforms without money, so now Govt. must do something for this issue. Culture and the structural model must be the same in all the universities. Higher Education Sector must be checked by the government. University need full autonomy. Govt. should interfere in the selection of the faculty. They must provide sufficient compensation to the faculty. There should be better facilities in all the Universities such as Research facilities, good labs, good library, etc. Last point but not the least that now we should not waste any further time and start some plans for the betterment of this issue.
