Hannaheaton Unitplan Learningsegment 3 1
Students will describe the structure and function of cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. a. Explain that cells take in nutrients in order to grow and divide and to make needed materials. b. Relate cell structures (cell membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplasts, mitochondria) to basic cell functions. c. Explain that cells are organized into tissues, tissues into organs, organs into systems, and systems into organisms. d. Explain that tissues, organs, and organ systems serve the needs cells have for oxygen, food, and waste removal. e. Explain the purpose of the major organ systems in the human body (i.e., digestion ,respiration, reproduction, circulation, excretion, movement, control, and coordination, and for protection from disease) Learning Objectives 1. Students will be able to compare and contrast cell structures and cell function. 2. Students will be able to illustrate a cells structure and describe its function. 3. Students will be able to organize cells into tissues, tissues into organs, organs into organ systems, and systems into organisms. 4. Students will be able to summarize that tissue, organs, and organ systems serve the needs cells have for oxygen, food, and waste. 5. Students will be able to distinguish the purpose of the major organ systems in the human body. 6. Students will be able to organize major organ systems in the human body.
Justification (Rationale) Understanding the basic units of a cell will build a foundation for higher level biology. Form equates function is necessary for students to develop enduring knowledge about the human body, its relation, and differences to other species. (Knowledge) The student will know... Students will know that a cell is the basic unit of life. Students will know the differences between Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic cells. Students will know that the cells specific parts relate to their specific functions. Students will know that external and internal factors that affect a cell, also affect the tissue, organs, system, and organism. Students will know that the organization of cells correlates with tissues, organs, systems, and organisms. Students will know that organ systems provide oxygen, food, and waste removal for the human body.
Students will know that organ systems have specific functions based on cells function.
(Skills) The student will be able to... The student will be able to distinguish between Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic cells. The student will be able to illustrate an entire cell. The student will be able to recognize the different parts of a cell. The student will be able to explain the functions of the cells specific parts. The student will be able to write about the effects of denatured cells on tissues, organs, systems, and organisms. The student will be able to diagram the organization of a cell as it correlates with tissues, organs, systems, and organisms. The student will be able to summarize that organ systems provide oxygen, food, and waste removal for the human body. The student will be able to classify a function with a specific cell, and organ system.
(Enduring Understandings) The student will understand that... The student will understand that living matter can be broken down into smaller parts. The student will understand that the specific function of matter depends upon the sum of its parts. The student will understand that classification of cells is based on the cells function. The student will understand that information about basic cell biology will improve their personal store of knowledge and their scientific inquiry. The student will understand that the organization of cells determines the physical properties, and function of the organ. The student will understand that scientific knowledge can be discovered with research and experimentation. The student will understand that organs are necessary for carrying nutrients, and waste removal throughout the body. The student will understand that cells work together to carry out the organs function.
Essential Questions 1. Explain how the Mitochondria are like a power plant, the Golgi apparatus like a post office, and the lysosome like the garbage man? What would the other parts of the cell be if the cell was a town? 2. What are some major differences between Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic cells? 3. What are humans vital organs?
4. If a skin cell has been damaged, what effect would it have on tissue? Organ? Organ system? 5. What organ system(s) provides the cells need for oxygen? How else does the system(s) carry out takes for the cell? 6. Why does the liver have a lot of smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
