WWZ Essay Make sure the title is creative dont just title it WWZ Essay The novel World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War written by Max Brooks is classified as zombie fiction. Weak topic sentence, make sure to capture the readers attention. According to about.com, Brooks takes many of the fears we face in today's world as well as the strategies that our leaders have developed to prepare for them and transfers them to the zombie menace. The novel is written differently than other novels because each chapter is about a different character. This allows readers to focus on that one character and realize their importance to the novel and then be introduced to a different character for the next chapter. World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War is mainly about how different characters dealt with the zombie apocalypse and in the novel we are shown how they felt about it by the interview they had with the narrator. Good Reads gave World War Z a score of 4 out of 5. Zombie Weekly stated, This book is so good that you might even come back from the dead to read it. " This shows that reviewers really fell in love with the book and that anyone who is really interested in exploring the zombie genre should read it. In the novel two characters, Kwang Jingshu and Fernando Oliveira, showed readers how they dealt with similar situations and yet they took different paths. Fernando Oliveira and Kwang Jingshu are key characters that allowed the zombie genre to flourish by acting differently when they faced similar situations. Make sure thesis is clear.

Kwang Jingshu was a doctor in China whos only purpose was to treat the infected people. He would say, Our only responsibility is to hold ourselves responsible to the people, (Ch. 2). When exposed to Patient Zero, Jingshu feared the twelve-year-old child. He stated, truly scared, of this frail child, (Ch. 2). However, Jingshu did not let the fear stop him from doing his job and he immediately took samples of the patients blood to run tests. As he examined Patient Zero, he discovered that he needed to see what had caused the patient to start biting. He did this by asking the patients mother about it. After receiving very dull answers, Jingshu then seeked advice from his colleague, Dr. Kuei. This shows how passionate Jingshu is about his career. Jingshu really cared about his patients and he would not stop looking for answers until he finally found the cause of the outbreak. As a result of Jingshus persistence in finding the cause of the outbreak, he was sent to jail. The narrator stated, Kwang Jingshu was arrested by the MSS and incarcerated without formal charges. By the time he escaped, the outbreak had spread beyond Chinas borders, (Ch. 2). If Jingshu had not been arrested he would have been able to keep on helping the infected people and maybe the outbreak would not have escaladed as quickly. Kwang Jingshu is an example of what a true doctor should be, sacrificing his freedom for the sake of others. Dont just summarize! In World War Z, Fernando Oliveira was an emaciated drug-addict that was a doctor in Brazil. He had assisted Dr. Silva during a heart transplant surgery. During his interview Oliveira stated, It killed my ego to have to work withunderthat prick, treating me like I was a firstyear resident. But what was I going to do. Herr Muller needed a new heart and my beach house needed a new herbal Jacuzzi, (Ch. 5). This showed that all Oliveira cared about was his well being. If he were a caring doctor, the last thing that would cross his mind would be the money he would earn after his service. He proved to readers how selfish and greedy he is. During the

surgery, the doctors did not realize that the patient was infected. However, after the surgery they were up for a surprise. The night after the surgery, Oliveira had gone out to enjoy himself, but deep down he knew something had gone wrong. When he received a call from the clinic he was informed that Herr Muller had not awaken from the anesthesia and had gone into a coma. The doctor immediately stopped what he was doing and rushed to the clinic. When he got to the clinic he was told that the patient had bitten Dr. Silva. At first he took it as a joke but then as he went inside the patients room, he faced reality. The doctor was faced with two options, he either let the infected patient live or he could kill him. Oliveira decided to kill the patient so that he wouldnt keep on biting people. Oliveira stated, I raised my pistol, aiming at his new heart. It was a Desert Eagle, Israeli, large and showy, which is why Id chosen it. Id never fired it before, thank God. I wasnt ready for the recoil. The round went wild, literally blowing his head off. Lucky, thats all, this lucky fool standing there with a smoking gun, and a stream of warm urine running down my leg, (Ch. 5). The fact that Oliveira took the easy way out by killing the patient instead of curing him proves again that Oliveira does not care about anyone else but himself. The fact that Oliveira uses illegal organs on his patients proves that maybe the outbreak started there. The organs that were transplanted might have been infected and that is how the virus was eventually spread.

Both characters, in a way, faced similar situations however, they both took different ways out. Jingshu decided to treat the infected patients and Oliveira decided to kill the patient. This sentence is confusing. This shows how their cultural backgrounds are extremely different. Jingshu tends to prioritize his patients because he would still call patients when they needed him. Oliveira is more of a careless doctor because he only looks for what benefits him instead of what benefits the patient. The narrator would say, The chairman of that council is Kwang Jingshu, a

medical doctor who, despite his advanced age and wartime injuries, still manages to make house calls to all his patients, (Ch. 2). Jingshu shows that his patients always come first and that no matter what situation he is facing he will always be there to cure them. This makes readers realize how much Jingshu is dedicated to his work. On the other hand, Fernando Oliveira is just a carless doctor that feels like he deserves everything. The fact that he went out the night of the surgery instead of taking care of his patient shows that he truly doesnt care. Even if Dr. Silva did give him the idea of going out that night, he could have easily not gone out. Oliveira stated, No, I didnt. I was trying to recover from a scandal, rebuild my reputation, my client base, my bank account. I wanted to forget what happened, not investigate it further. By the time I realized the danger, it was scratching at my front door, (Ch. 5). This proves once again that all Oliveira cares about is money and that he does not care that he is the one that is responsible for the outbreak due to the fact that he did not check to make sure if the organs that he had transplanted were infected beforehand.

Furthermore, both Kwang Jingshu and Fernando Oliveira prove that they act differently when facing similar circumstances. In the end, this allows readers to experience what the zombie genre is really like. These characters are important to the novel because they contrast one other and provide uniqueness to the novel as a whole. Restate thesis in conclusion.
