San Francisco Opera House-: California

The San Francisco Opera House relies on a Clear-Com intercom system for clear communications during performances, with over 65 beltpacks and a master station used by the stage manager and in the control room. The system is designed for flexibility with four analog matrix switch panels allowing any station to be assigned to any channel, and over 100 patch panels distributed throughout the facility provide redundancy with two separate intercom lines per panel.

San Francisco Opera House-California

To create a world-class performance, clear communications are essential to the San Francisco Opera House. Max Christensen, the Opera's lead sound technician, states that "our operations demand a zero failure rate" from the intercom system. He and his staff have taken many actions to ensure that all will go as planned. 65 to 70 intercom stations, predominantly Clear-Com RS-501 and RS-502 beltpacks for mobility, are used on a typical show. A Clear-Com MS-812A twelve-channel intercom station is located at the stage manager position, with a duplicate in the control room for monitoring and problem solving. The system is also designed for flexibility and configurability. Four custom 12-channel (plus "off") analog matrix switch panels allow the control-room operator to assign any intercom station, wherever it is located in the house, to any intercom channel. Over 100 patch panels, with connectors for intercom, microphones, video, and line-level audio are distributed throughout the facility. Each of the 254 intercom drops goes to one of these patch panels, with each panel having two separate intercom lines for redundancy.
