Lesson Plan

Title Focus Author Grade level Objective

Constructing Equations Linear Equations Rachel McGuire Algebra 1 Students The objective is for students to master the learning targets in this Common Core State Standard: CCSS.Math.Content.HSF-LE.A.2 Construct linear and exponential functions, including arithmetic and geometric sequences, given a graph, a description of a relationship, or two input-output pairs (include reading these from a table). In this lesson we will just focus on linear equations. In the next lesson we will move on to exponential functions. At the end of this lesson SWBAT: 1. Construct linear equations (including arithmetic and geometric sequences) given a graph. 2. Construct linear equations (including arithmetic and geometric sequences) given two input-output pairs (including tables). 3. Use excel as a tool to construct graphs and find equations.

Assessments

The assessment for this lesson will be a formative assessments. Students will be placed into three groups of six. Assuming there are 18 students in the class. If the class is larger, I will attempt to gain access to an extra laptop or two if possible. Otherwise I will need to rotate the groups to ensure everyone has the opportunity to use the computer. The students will work together to complete the worksheet. There are six problems on the worksheet, so each student will get an opportunity to sit at the computer to complete one problem.

Procedures

Start of Class: Review the slope-intercept form of linear equations, the equation for slope, and what the variables stand for.

1. Slope intercept ( y = mx + b ) 2. Slope (m = (y y1)/(x x1) )

Also recall that we have learned how to solve linear equations for a given value of x. We have also practiced graphing linear equations. Today we are going to work on creating linear functions from a graph or a table. Essentially, we are working backward from what we already know how to do. We are going to use excel to create these graphs. The first example we will work out by hand. Example 1: Use the values in the table to first find the value of the slope, m. m = ( 6 2)/(-3 3) = 4/-6 = -2/3 Now write the equation in slope-intercept form. y = -2/3 x + 4 X 3 0 Y 2 4

-3 6 We want to graph this equation in excel. I will show the students how to do this on the projector hooked up to my computer. There are two ways we can create the table. I will demonstrate both ways although students will need to use the second method since they will not know the equation of the line. First, we will use the equation to make the table. We start by labelling and inputting the values for x. Each value is placed in a new row. In the column next to the x values, we will label it y. However, rather than typing in the values for y (2, 4, and 6) we will type: =(2/3)*(click on the x-value cell next to this cell) + 4 and then hit enter. You will notice the value in the cell is 2, and we cannot see the equation we typed. If you double click on the cell, you will see the formula again. Now if we grab the lower right corner of that cell

box and drag down two columns, it will fill in the 4 and 6 using the formula. Now we can select the table (click the x and drag to highlight entire table) and click the insert tab and then the chart that looks like a scatter plot. I want you to choose the first option which is a scatter with no lines. We now have a plot of our points. To see the line, we will right click on one of the points and select add trendline. In the box that pops up, we will select linear and check the box that says display equation on chart. As you can see, the equation it displays is the same as the formula we used to create the table. On the worksheet, you will not first solve for the equation by hand. You will simply type in the whole table you are given into excel, and then use the trendline to see the equation. I wanted to show you how you are able to use formulas in excel if you know the equation. Example 2: We are going to do the same thing by using this graph. The first step will be to make a table from the picture. X 2 0 -2 Y 10 2 -6

Once again, use excel to make a graph of the points and find the trendline. The graph should look just like the picture if you choose your points correctly. We find here that the equation is: y = 4x + 2
(note: if the graph looks different it may be because of the scale of the axes)

In-Class Activity: I want you to use the rest of the class period to complete the worksheet. In your groups, each person must get a turn to actually use the computer. Help each other through the process and raise your hand if you need assistance. I will walk around and monitor the students progress. If a group finishes early, I may give them a couple of equations to practice using formulas in excel to make tables and graphs. If time permits I may also suggest the students try to display two equations on one graph, and then show them how if they cant figure it out. Another thing I would suggest they explore is how to change the axes. The main focus will be for them to use the software to create the graphs and find the equations. This will be the first exposure my students have to excel in my class. While the focus here is finding the equation from the table or graph, I also want them to get familiar with the technology. Excel is a very good tool for math since there are many equations built into the software. I am using this lesson to allow the students to take a first look at how you can use formulas and the graphing capability of excel to obtain information.
