Wall Hung Magazine


and Book Rack
This easy-to-build wall-hung magazine and book rack is an ideal begin-
ner project. It can be made using only the table saw, saber saw, and
drill, and it can be completed in one afternoon. The entire project is
made from 3/4" stock. We used mahogany, buy any hard or soft wood,
including pine, will work.

Magazine and Book Rack Step-by-Step In-
structions
1. Cut the back (A), sides (B), and bottom (C) to size.
2. Transfer the illustrated grid pattern.
3. Use a band or saber saw to cut out the curved back.
4. Notch the sides at the top to accept the back.
5. Cut a 3/8" deep x 3/4" wide rabbet in the bottom to fit the sides.
6. Cut the upper and lower rails (D and E), both of which are 3/4" thick x 1-3/8"
wide.
7. Cut the center, end, and side stiles (F, G, and H) to the indicated 3/8" x 3/4" wide
dimensions.
8. Assemble the rack with 3/16" diameter dowels at all joints and mating surfaces.
Single blind dowels in each end hold the stiles in place, while twin blind dowels
fix the upper rails to the sides.
9. Expose all remaining dowels as indicated.
10. Allow and extra 1/8" so the dowels will not bottom, and drill the blind dowel
holes.
11. Cut the exposed dowels long and trim flush after assembly. NOTE: Remember to
bevel the dowel ends so glue won’t be forced into a pocket at the bottom of the
dowel holes.
12. Finish sand the rack, softening all the edges.
13. Rub in several coats of tung oil to finish.
