Pondicherry: Timeline: Early Period

Pondicherry has a long history, first as an important part of Roman trade in India in the early 4th century AD. It was later ruled by the Pallava kingdom, Chola kingdom of Thanjavur, and Pandya kingdom over the next few centuries. In the 17th century, it came under the rule of the Sultan of Bijapur and then the French India Company established control in 1674, though it changed hands between the Dutch and British multiple times over the following centuries. Finally, in 1954, Pondicherry and other French territories in India were officially transferred to Indian control, marking the end of French rule.
