Written Reviews of Photography: Community Art: Unit 1 P4 / Unit 2 M2 / Unit 30 M2
For my community art project I decided to produce a photography piece. My idea was to get as many sixth form students as possible to write on a piece of paper their ambition and/or what they want to be when theyre older. I took inspiration from Gillian Wearing and her project Signs that Say What You Want Them to Say and Not Signs that Say What Someone Else Wants You to Say, with the idea of portraying personality and identity formation through the simple display of future careers and ambitions. In my photography set it is evident that I have managed to capture a variety of students and consequently a variety of ambitions and life goals that vary amongst individuals. I tried to capture the same shot in each photograph, but it is clear that some students have posed differently to others. To improve for next time it may look more effective if I set up a place for the photographs to be captured, and the students follow instruction so that every image looks connected and similar. To review, I think the images are effective as an adherence to Gillian Wearings project. I feel it is portrayed through the images that there are many different people at the sixth form who either share or contrast in ambition and life goals, but unite as a whole as a sixth form and for my project. To produce this project I firstly decided I wanted to produce a photography outcome, as I am more successful with photography than with painting. I then decided to create something that brings the community of sixth form together and a bonding exercise in a non literal sense. I think writing something on a piece of paper can emphasise a lot more meaning than the norm, and without emotion from the individual. I used an SLR camera in order to take the photos, and once they were taken I edited them to enhance the main source in the image and fade and blur the waste behind the students. To improve I feel the editing could have looked a lot more professional, as it was my first time using Photoshop.
