Indexing Devices

This document discusses indexing jigs and fixtures, which are used to precisely position workpieces or fixtures in multiple locations for machining operations like drilling or milling. Rotary indexing is used for holes on a large pitch circle or milling slots in a circular workpiece. Linear indexing is used for drilling multiple holes of the same size and pitch. An indexing jig or fixture must include an indexing device to position the workpiece, a locking device to secure it in position during machining, and a separate locking device for the movable or indexed part that is convenient to operate each time indexing occurs.

INDEXING JIGS AND FIXTURES

WHAT IS INDEXING?

INDEXING

INDEXING
Indexing is a process of quick, accurate location of w.p. or fixture in a number of specific positions. Indexing involves periodic linear or rotary movement of the indexed part to the next position.

Rotary indexing
Used when holes have to be drilled on a large pitch circle. slots are to be milled in the periphery of a circular w.p.

Linear indexing
Used when a number of holes with same size and pitch

are to be drilled in a workpiece

Basic Features of an Indexing Jig or Fixture

The jig or fixture must include: 1) n indexing device to position the member and a locking device to secure it in position during the machining 2) slide or a bearing s!stem to control the movement of the indexed part "movable member). 3)#ocking device for the movable member "indexed part) must be separate from the w.p. clamp$ it must be convenient to operate because it must be operated each time the w.p. is indexed.
%or example, in the example shown the w.p. is clamped once during the milling

operation, but the movable member must be clamped four times during the operation.

Advantages
ost of the jig is reduced !ime of operation is reduced
