Titanium alloys are difficult to machine due to high temperatures generated at the tool-chip interface, which accelerates tool wear and reduces tool life and surface quality. The study analyzed tool wear reduction techniques for titanium alloy machining based on literature and experiments. Finish turning of Ti-6Al-4V was conducted at high speeds using air jet-assisted machining to extend tool life by applying compressed air to the cutting zone in addition to cutting fluid. Cryogenic coolants like LN2 and CO2 also significantly reduced tool wear in titanium alloy turning. Using cryogenic coolants almost eliminated crater wear on the rake face and flank wear, while air jet-assisted machining enhanced heat transfer and cryogenic coolants reduced

ABSTRACT
Titanium alloys has been applied to elements and structures in Aerospace engineering, Bio engineering, marine engineering etc. Because of its superior properties like corrosion resistance, specific strength, biocompatibility etc.. However machining of such alloys presents a great challenge due to high temperature generation at the tool chip interface which is likely to accelerate tool wear, shorten tool life and deteriorate surface integrity. In this study different tool used for effective machining of titanium alloys, its wear and techniques for its improvement have been analyzed based on the literature and experiments conducted. For this finish turning of Ti-6Al-4V was conducted at higher cutting speeds using new lubrication method called air jet assisted machining in which not only the cutting fluid but also the jet of compressed air was applied to the cutting zone to extend the tool life. It was also found that use of cryogenic coolants especially LN2 and CO2 in the machining process reduced the tool wear significantly. For this Ti6Al-4V alloy bar was turned by using PVD coated insert at different speed feed combination in dry, wet, cryogenic CO2 and cryogenic LN2 machining. The use of such coolants almost eliminated the amount of crater on the rake surface and flank wear on the clearance surfaces. Here in the Air jet assisted machining technique heat transfer was enhanced by air jet toward the tool tip whereas cutting temperature, cutting force and flank wear were considerably reduced by the use of cryogenic coolants thus a better way of machining Titanium alloys without considerable tool wear and high surface integrity is proposed which enhances its use in areas like oil and gas, Aerospace and also in medical industries for implant and dental materials
