Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines that causes diarrhea, vomiting and dehydration. It is usually caused by viruses and can range from mild to severe. Mild to moderate dehydration is best treated with oral rehydration therapy using oral rehydration solutions given every 5 minutes over 3-4 hours. More severe dehydration requires intravenous fluids to replace fluid deficits over 24 hours along with continued use of oral rehydration solutions. Antibiotics and antidiarrheal medications are generally not recommended for treatment of gastroenteritis.
