Deinking of Newspaper Waste by Using In-House Produced Xylanases

The document discusses using enzymes produced in-house, specifically xylanases, for the deinking of newspaper waste as an alternative to conventional chemical methods. It describes the process of sorting, shredding and washing newspaper waste before applying the enzyme for deinking, which involves detachment and removal of ink from fibers. The production and optimization of the xylanase enzyme is explained along with its use in the deinking process and analysis of results.

Deinking Of Newspaper Waste by Using In-house produced Xylanases Due to significant disadvantages of conventional chemical methods, the development

of an alternative method for deinking is required. The use of enzymes is a potentially efficient solution to overcome the problems encountered with traditional deinking techniques. Deinking which involves the removal of printing ink, mainly consists of two steps i.e. detachment of ink particles from the fiber surface followed by the removal of detached ink from the pulp slurry. Before the deinking process, newspaper waste is sorted to remove any nonpaper ob ects. The sorted papers are shredded to a manageable size !mechanical shredding" and washed to obtain a pulp with a consistency of #$%. The enzyme &ylanase employed in this process is obtained by solid state and submerged fermentation techniques. ' large number of microorganisms including bacteria, yeast and fungi produce different groups of enzymes. ' basal medium supplemented with various carbon sources is used for the production of &ylanase. The enzyme activity is determined by measuring the amount of sugars liberated after enzyme substrate reaction using (, )dinitrosalicyclic acid reagent. The best reaction conditions for enzymatic deinking are optimized using different process variables which influence the efficiency of enzymes. 'fter optimization the enzyme solution is added first to the liquid medium and pulp is added later to ensure even distribution of enzyme on the pulp fiber to facilitate ma&imum ink detachment. 'fter each treatment, the pulp slurry is squeeze to collect filtrate for further analysis and the pulp is washed with tap water )-* times.
