Petroleum Refining Technology and Economics

This document is a homework assignment from Tripoli University's Faculty of Engineering Chemical Engineering Department. It contains solutions to two problems: 1) Estimating the hydrogen consumption required to remove sulfur and reduce nitrogen in a hydrotreating process feedstock. 2) Determining the yield of n-butane and C5+ gasoline from reforming 4500 BPD of high-severity reformate gasoline to a research octane number of 92.

9.2- Estimate the hydrogen consumption required to completely remove the sulfur from a hydrotreater feedstock and to reduce the nitrogen content of the product to 15 ppm by weight. The 48.5API naphtha feed to the unit contains 0.62% sulfur, 0.15% nitrogen, and 0.09% oxygen by weight ? Solution From page 181 :-

Feed f-( H2S , N2 , O2 ) = ( 70 , 320 , 180 )

From page 182 :-

Assume hydrogen loss by solution in products is approximately of feed = 190

70*0.62 + 320 * ( 0.15 15*

) + 180*0.09 + 190 = 297.12

10.2- Determine the yield of n-butane and C5+ gasoline when reforming 4500 BPD of HSR gasoline, KW = 11.9, to a 92 clear RON. Solution

For C5+ gasoline V% = From Fig 10.4 by f-(RON = 92 , KW = 11.9 ) = 85 %

For n-butane gasoline V% = From Fig 10.5 by f-( C5+ '' V% = 85 %'' ) = 5.4 % V% =
