1.3 Scientific Investigation

Scientists use scientific process skills and the scientific method to conduct scientific investigations in a systematic and reliable way. The scientific process skills include asking questions, making observations, analyzing and interpreting data, and taking measurements. The steps of the scientific method are: 1) identifying the problem, 2) making a hypothesis, 3) planning the experiment, 4) controlling variables, 5) collecting data, 6) analyzing and interpreting data, 7) making a conclusion, and 8) writing a report.

Steps in scientific investigation:

Scientist use the scientific method when carry out scientific investigation. They follow the steps to make sure that what they do is systematic and reliable.

STEPS 1: IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM

Determining what you want to find out
Example: Will the pendulum swing faster if the length of the pendulum is shortened?

STEPS 2: MAKING A HYPOTHESIS

Try to provide an answer to the above question by making a smart guess.
Example: when the length of the pendulum is shortened, it will swing faster.

STEPS 3: PLANNING THE EXPERIMENT

Planning how to test your smart guess Involved:
What apparatus to be use What observation to make What measurement to take How to record the observation

STEPS 4: CONTROLLING THE VARIABLES.

Decide what condition that you are going to change You would need to decide:
Which things must not change Which things you will change What you will observe or measure

STEPS 5: COLLECTING DATA

Decide how to record the observation
In sentences In table

STEPS 6: ANALYSING & INTEPRETING DATA.

Find the best way to present the data Study your data carefully and find if there are any pattern in your data. You may present it in the form of a graph.

STEPS 7: MAKING A CONCLUSION

Based on the pattern in the result of your investigation, make a conclusion whether the smart guess that you made is true.

STEPS 8: WRITING A REPORT.

Write your full report of your investigation in your science report book.
