Trigonometry

Trigonometry is the study of relationships between the sides and angles of triangles. The earliest work on trigonometry was recorded in Egypt and Babylon, where astronomers used it to calculate distances between stars and planets from Earth. There are six trigonometric ratios - sine, cosine, tangent, cotangent, secant, and cosecant - that relate the sides of a right triangle to its acute angles. Some trigonometric ratios have specific values for certain angles, and trigonometric identities are equations relating ratios of the same angle. Trigonometry has applications in calculating heights and distances using angle of elevation, angle of depression, and line of sight.

Trigonometry

History of Trigonometry
The word trigonometry is derived from the Greek

words tri(meaning three),gon (meaning measure) and metron (meaning measure). In fact, trigonometry is the study of relationships between the sides and angles of a triangle. The earliest known work on trigonometry was recorded in Egypt and Babylon. Early astronomers used it to find out the distances of the stars and the planets from Earth.

Trigonometric Ratios
The ratios of the sides of a right triangle with respect to its acute angles, is called trigonometric ratios of the angles. Trigonometric Ratios are as follows: Sine of ang. A= side opposite to ang. A /hypotenuse= BC /AC Cos of ang. A= side adjacent to angle A/hypotenuse=AB/AC Tan of ang. A=side opposite to angle A/side adjacent to ang. A= BC/AB
Cosec of ang. A=1/sine of ang. A=hypotenese /side opposite to ang.

A=AC/AB
Cot of ang. A= 1/tangent of ang. A=side adjacent to angle A/side

opposite to ang. A = AB/BC

Some ratios are given below: o Sin(90 -A)=Cos A o Tan(90 -A)=Cot A o Sec(90 -A)=Cosec A o Cos (90 - A)=Sin A o Cot (90 - A)=Tan A o Cosec(90 - A)=Sec A

Trigonometric Identities
An equation involving trigonometric ratios of an angle

is called a trigonometric identities. Some identities are :

cos2A + sin2=1

cot2A+ 1= cosec2A sec2A-tan2= 1

Some Applications of Trigonometry

In this topic we will discuss about the uses of trigonometry in day to day life , about how the astronomers used this to calculate distances between Earth and the stars.

Height And Distances

The Angle Of Elevation of the point viewed is the

angle formed by the line of sight with the horizontal when the point being viewed is above the horizontal ,i.e., the case when we raise our head to look at the object.

Height And Distances

The Angle Of Depression of a point on the object

being viewed is the angle formed by the line of sight with the horizontal when the point is below horizontal level, i.e., the case when we lower our head to look at the point being viewed .

Height And Distances

The Line Of Sight is the line drawn from the eye of an

observer to the point in the object viewed by the observer.
