Amongtherecommendationsfromtheexpertcommitteeconvenedbytheinstitute: Elementaryschoolchildrenshouldspendatleast30minutesadayinPEclassmiddleschoolandhighschoolstudentsshouldgetanaverageof45 minutesadayinPE.That's150minutesaweekforelementarykidsand225minutesformiddleandhighschoolstudents. AtleasthalfofthePEclasstimeshouldbespentdoingvigoroustomoderateintensityphysicalactivity. Inmanyschools,physicaleducationclassesandrecesshavebeensqueezedoutbecauseofincreasingeducationaldemandsandtoughfinancial times.SincethepassageoftheNoChildLeftBehindActin2001,44%ofschooladministratorsreportcuttingsignificanttimefromPEandrecessso there'smoretimeforsubjectssuchasreadingandmath,thereportsays. MarkTerry,presidentoftheNationalAssociationofElementarySchoolPrincipalsandaprincipalatEubanksIntermediateSchoolinSouthlake,Texas, says,"Weallwanthealthykids.It'sagreatgoal,butadifficultone. "Youhavetolookattheunintendedconsequencesofthingslikethis.Theyarewellmeaning,andtheyaregoodforkids,butyouhavetoalterthe amountoftimeyouhaveforothersubjects,"hesays. "Theproblemis,whatareyougoingtodolessof?Areyougoingtodoawaywithartorcutbackonmusicorcutbackontheminutesyouhaveinthe classroom?" Havingprogramsbeforeandafterschoolsoundslikeagoodidea,butthequestioniswhoisgoingtorunthemandwhoisgoingtopayforthem,Terry says. Kohlresponds:"Wetriedtoberealisticintheserecommendations,andtherearecreativewaystoworkthesethingswithoutsacrificingothersubject matter." Currently,athirdofchildrenintheUSAareoverweightorobese,puttingthematgreaterriskofdevelopingahostofdebilitatingandcostlydiseases, includingtype2diabetes,highbloodpressureandhighcholesterol. Physicalactivityimproveskids'fitness,lowerstheirriskofobesityandtype2diabetesandhelpsbuildstrongbonesandmuscles.Childrenwhoare moreactivehavegreaterattentionspansandbetteracademicperformance,thereportsays. ThereportrecommendsthattheDepartmentofEducationdesignatephysicaleducationasacoresubjectlikemathandreading."Itisasimportant becauseitaffectskids'health,cognitivefunctionandoveralldevelopment,"Kohlsays. Thereporturgesstatelegislaturesanddepartmentsofeducationtoadoptand/orstrengthenphysicaleducationandrecesspolicies,aswellas beforeandafterschoolpolicies,tomeetthegoalsthereportoutlines.
