Osaka Castle was originally built in 1583 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi on the site of the former Ishiyama Honganji Temple near Osaka. It fell into ruin during sieges in the early 1600s but was later rebuilt by Tokugawa Hidetada. Most of this reconstruction was destroyed during a 19th century war. The current castle structure was rebuilt in 1931 based on historical paintings. Along with castles in Nagoya and Kumamoto, Osaka Castle is considered one of Japan's most important castles.
