SCHOOLS OF HOPE

Why are we here?

Have you ever had a day when you wondered if you were really in Gods perfect place? I sure have and on that day I asked God if he would show me that we are exactly where He wants us to be at this time. Did we take on too much? Is there a solution to the challenges? And then the answer came ~~~ That same day a mom came up to me on the streets outside of one of our schools and said: Sometimes we are embarrassed to send our children to school as they dont have money for the merienda but now you are providing food for free and we dont have to worry about our children being hungry anymore. Two little boys were showing off their school project to me. They had built a lovely city street model out of paper products. One of the boys turned to me and said thank you for feeding us. A little girl ran up to me and called me by name, she said JUDYand made sure she had my full attention, then she said I LOVE YOU! in English. Kids do not usually speak English here. She smiled and went on her merry way.

Many of you are now enjoying the beautiful weather. We hope and pray you will have a wonderful time with family and friends enjoying lots of BBQs and fun activities. For the first time in many years we will not have the privilege of spending time with our family and friends at Spring Bay Camp this summer. It has become very special for us as we always get to have our grandkids for a few weeks and they LOVE camp time as well. We have recently launched more programs in the schools which makes difficult to take the time off. However, there is Good News~ in just a few weeks we will be officially welcoming the Ruttan family to Honduras as they come to join us in ministry. We have prayed for volunteers and finally help is on the way.

GOD IS SO GOOD!

This Is Why We Are Here!

Thank you for your ongoing financial support and for praying for the ministry in Honduras. Randy and Judy Lundrigan

Thank you for feeding us.

SUMMER 2013

Update from our ERDO ISFP (In School Feeding program)

The ISFP is now operational in all three of our Public Schools. We have trained staff, teachers and parents all aspects of the program including hand washing, proper food preparation techniques, and maintaining a clean kitchen and storage area. The ISFP implementation has not been without its challenges but we are moving forward toward having a wonderful ISFP experience that provides sustainability for hundreds of marginalized children and allowing them to be provided with a nutritional breakfast drink and lunch each day.

Water ~
One of our biggest challenges is with obtaining potable water. We boil what water we have each night so we are able to have water to cook food and wash hands each morning. At times we have run out of water as this precious natural resource is very sparse in Honduras. Water is carried in buckets from the community water tank when they have some. This tank has now been deemed unusable at present as it has been sitting empty for a long time and also contains garbage. Water is also trucked in by tankers periodically when the roads are passable. However, it needs to be purchased by the barrel which costs about $2.50 each. Most families cannot afford this as this is a days wage for a family. If they buy water for the school it may mean their family does without some other precious commodity that day. We have been hosting meetings with community leaders and also with the local water company to see what we can do to resolve the issue.

Teaching Handwashing

Volunteers ~
We also have challenges with sufficient moms to cook, prepare and serve the meals. It takes six moms per day per school to feed the children. If the moms go out to make a living for their families (many homes are single moms) they cannot commit to preparing and serving food for the day or they have no way to earn an income. The parents WANT the program as do the teachers, but they are not always able to commit to do their part. Initially we had many meeting before we launched the program outlining the partnership responsibilities and everyone was totally on board. Sometimes cultural responses are yes even though they may not be able to follow through on their commitment. Please pray with us as we work to find positive solutions.

Happy Faces and Smiles All Around

We have one full time employee to supervise each school. They are all wonderful people and a joy to have in the program; they love God and love the children. They are honest and have integrity and always strive to do the right thing.

Delightful notes from Damaris Lopez

A couple of days after the program started in Mary Flakes School, a few of the older kids came to me with sad faces and said, we dont like the CSB! I was so worriedthen they all smiled and said we LOVE it !...they were joking. One of the mothers whose name is Rosy told me that her child did not like to eat. Since the child began to have the daily nutritional drink (CSB), the childs appetite has increased and he is eating more. She has also noticed a change in the childs behavior. He is more active in everything. Rosy is very grateful with the program. One day we had no parents to help cook the food. Mothers were called and the Directors and Teachers tried to find a solution. No one was able to come. Sadly we had no choice but to shut down the program for that day. CSB was served in the morning but we were unable to make lunch. I went with the Director to each class and advised the kids there was no lunch today as there was no one to cook. When I was closing up the kitchen a 3rd grader, Escarlet came to the feeding station door. She looked up at me and said, I can help cook, Ive seen my mom do it! So I can make the rice and beans. Two minutes later she was back with three more small children, one was going to make the tortillas, one was going to do the dishes and the other one was going to help serve. She said we are hungry, and the little ones are hungry, so please let us help. While we could not allow these small children to cook in a hot kitchen for safety reasons, somehow that difficult day still made my heart feel good and brought tears to all of our eyes

Henrys Highlights
A mother from the Community was sleeping in her house when her little kid started to cry and saying MOM COME ON. LETS GO GET MY DRINK. So the mom came to the school and the little kid was fed with the CSB. A little girl, Dilcia, came up to me and said, you are my hero! because you feed us!

Kindergarten Children

Child Care Sponsorship

Child Care Plus has 87 children and 2 classrooms sponsored which is great! The kids and parents are so happy to have a HAND UP! We never refer to it as a handout! One church started a child in the sponsorship program as a MOTHERS DAY gift to the church and they also sponsored a child for FATHERS DAY. We have several work groups & bible study groups that sponsor a child monthly. Secular work groups love doing good and helping humanity. Imagine the joy of receiving a letter from a child you sponsor or knowing you are making a difference in the life of a child! What can you do to help give a child hope?

SUMMER 2013 Scholarships - Helping kids continue education beyond the 6th grade

Each year we have been awarding scholarships to Grade Six students who are graduating. For many students this is the end of their formal education unless someone like you helps keep them in school. One church in Newfoundland has ten kids in the scholarship program and they have committed for the five year duration of continuing education for these precious kids. Some individuals have two to three kids in the program and others one. Whatever you are able to do helps educate a child and gives them Hope for the future.

Road Repairs Needed

The road which washed out last year close to Moises Starkman school is still in need of repair. We were unable to repair the washout prior to this. So if anyone out there wishes to help do this, we anticipate it can be done for $400.00. Let us know if you can help. Fixing this part of the road allows 7 community families to have access to the main road. Water trucks cannot pass there in its present condition. If you can help fix this please contact us.
