SCHOOLS OF HOPE
Many of you are now enjoying the beautiful weather. We hope and pray you will have a wonderful time with family and friends enjoying lots of BBQs and fun activities. For the first time in many years we will not have the privilege of spending time with our family and friends at Spring Bay Camp this summer. It has become very special for us as we always get to have our grandkids for a few weeks and they LOVE camp time as well. We have recently launched more programs in the schools which makes difficult to take the time off. However, there is Good News~ in just a few weeks we will be officially welcoming the Ruttan family to Honduras as they come to join us in ministry. We have prayed for volunteers and finally help is on the way.
GOD IS SO GOOD!
SUMMER 2013
The ISFP is now operational in all three of our Public Schools. We have trained staff, teachers and parents all aspects of the program including hand washing, proper food preparation techniques, and maintaining a clean kitchen and storage area. The ISFP implementation has not been without its challenges but we are moving forward toward having a wonderful ISFP experience that provides sustainability for hundreds of marginalized children and allowing them to be provided with a nutritional breakfast drink and lunch each day.
Water ~
One of our biggest challenges is with obtaining potable water. We boil what water we have each night so we are able to have water to cook food and wash hands each morning. At times we have run out of water as this precious natural resource is very sparse in Honduras. Water is carried in buckets from the community water tank when they have some. This tank has now been deemed unusable at present as it has been sitting empty for a long time and also contains garbage. Water is also trucked in by tankers periodically when the roads are passable. However, it needs to be purchased by the barrel which costs about $2.50 each. Most families cannot afford this as this is a days wage for a family. If they buy water for the school it may mean their family does without some other precious commodity that day. We have been hosting meetings with community leaders and also with the local water company to see what we can do to resolve the issue.
Teaching Handwashing
Volunteers ~
We also have challenges with sufficient moms to cook, prepare and serve the meals. It takes six moms per day per school to feed the children. If the moms go out to make a living for their families (many homes are single moms) they cannot commit to preparing and serving food for the day or they have no way to earn an income. The parents WANT the program as do the teachers, but they are not always able to commit to do their part. Initially we had many meeting before we launched the program outlining the partnership responsibilities and everyone was totally on board. Sometimes cultural responses are yes even though they may not be able to follow through on their commitment. Please pray with us as we work to find positive solutions.
Staff ~
We have one full time employee to supervise each school. They are all wonderful people and a joy to have in the program; they love God and love the children. They are honest and have integrity and always strive to do the right thing.
Henrys Highlights
A mother from the Community was sleeping in her house when her little kid started to cry and saying MOM COME ON. LETS GO GET MY DRINK. So the mom came to the school and the little kid was fed with the CSB. A little girl, Dilcia, came up to me and said, you are my hero! because you feed us!
Kindergarten Children
SUMMER 2013 Scholarships - Helping kids continue education beyond the 6th grade
Each year we have been awarding scholarships to Grade Six students who are graduating. For many students this is the end of their formal education unless someone like you helps keep them in school. One church in Newfoundland has ten kids in the scholarship program and they have committed for the five year duration of continuing education for these precious kids. Some individuals have two to three kids in the program and others one. Whatever you are able to do helps educate a child and gives them Hope for the future.
The road which washed out last year close to Moises Starkman school is still in need of repair. We were unable to repair the washout prior to this. So if anyone out there wishes to help do this, we anticipate it can be done for $400.00. Let us know if you can help. Fixing this part of the road allows 7 community families to have access to the main road. Water trucks cannot pass there in its present condition. If you can help fix this please contact us.
