Determination of Nitrite

The document outlines the procedure to determine the amount of nitrite in a sample using a volumetric flask, burette, pipette flask, and breaker. Sodium nitrite is weighed and dissolved in water, then titrated with a standardized potassium manganate solution until the purple color just disappears. The volume of potassium manganate used is then used to calculate the amount of nitrite originally present in the sample.

Determination of Nitrite Apparatus: Volumetric Flask, burette, pipette flask, breaker.

Procedure: (a) The standardization of KMNO4 solution is to be done as before. (b) Weigh out accurately about 1.1 gm of sodium nitrite, disolve it into a cold water, and dilute to 250 ml in 250 ml volumetric flask by shaking it continuously .Pour nitrite solution in the burette. Measure out 25ml of Std. 0.02M KMnO4 solution into a 500ml flask add 25 ml of 0.5M sulphuric acid and heat it to 40C. Add nitrite solution from the burette slowly and with constant stirring until the permanganate solution is just decolorized. [at the end, the solution must be added slowly as the reaction is sluggish]. OBSERVATION: Table: For determining amount of nitrite present. No. of Obs. Vol.of KMnO4 solution taken initial 1 2 3 4 Calculations: (use blank space) Results: Burette reading Final Concurrent Remarks
