Router Password Recovery

To recover the password on a router, boot it into ROM monitor mode by pressing Ctrl+Break during boot, change the configuration register to enable setting 6, reload the router, copy the startup configuration to running, change the passwords, reset the configuration register, save the new configuration, and optionally reload the router.

ROUTER PASSWORD RECOVERY 1.

Boot the router and interrupt the boot sequence by performing a break, which will take the router into ROM monitor mode. Ctrl+Break key combination 2. Change the configuration register to turn on bit 6 (with the value 0x2142). If old series router Rommonitor mode > >o/r 0x2142
If it is a new series router Rommonitor mode

Rommon 1 > Rommon 1 >confreg 0x2142

3. Reload the router.


If it is a new series router Rommonitor mode

Rommon 2 > reset

If old series router Rommonitor mode >I


4. Enter privileged mode. 5. Copy the startup-config file to running-config.

Router# copy start run


6. Change the password.

(Console password & Enable password) 7. Reset the configuration register to the default value . Router (Config)# config-register 0x2102
8. Save the router configuration.

Router# copy Run Start 9. Reload the router (optional).


Router# Reload
