Independent Behaviour: Resisting Pressure To Conform

Independent behavior refers to resisting conformity pressures and authority pressures. People are more likely to resist conformity when they have social support from others who also resist, have confidence in themselves, or have an anti-conformist personality. Those who resist authority are encouraged when they see others disobey or are aware of the consequences of obeying. People with an internal locus of control, believing they control their own behavior, are more likely to resist pressures and act independently than those with an external locus of control.

Independent Behaviour

Independent behaviour refers to the ability to resist pressures to conform to a majority, or resisting pressures to obey the orders given by an authority figure. Resisting pressure to conform: Social Support (disobedient model)- when participants have support from someone else that doesnt agree they are more likely to resist. Like in Asch experiment, when a confederate gave another answer to the rest, levels of conformity reduced. Confidence and individuality- factors of self-esteem and intellect lead to higher levels of resistance. Milgram found that individuals who had personal insight into the consequences of their actions had more resistant and Asch found people with high self-efficacy (ability with regards to task) resisted more Anti-Conformist Personality- deliberately go out of their way to not conform. This could be due to deeply held personal beliefs or perhaps just wanting to be seen as different.

Resisting pressure to obey: Disobedient model- watching others disobey encourages the participants that they can do the same. Awareness of consequences increases resistance- like in Milgrams, when they knew the person was in pain they were more likely to resist.

Locus of Control (Rotter 1966) this refers to a persons perception of personal control over their own behaviour. External locus of control-person believes what happens to them is due to external factors like luck or fate Internal locus of control- person believes that what happens to them is due to themselves. Internals are more likely to resist pressures as they feel in control of themselves. They also are less likely to rely on others as they are more independent and are more risk-taking etc.
