Elena Clark Rock Lesson Plan Key Concept: Rocks come in all shapes and sizes.

Grade: Kindergarten Objective: Students will be able to identify different characteristics of rocks. Students will be able to logically organize a set of rocks. Materials: 26 snack-size ziploc bags 20 rocks per bag of varying colors, sizes, texture, etc. 26 loupes Students science journals 26 slips of paper with the writing prompt (What ways can the rocks be sorted?) 26 glue sticks Teacher Actions: 1. Introduction: Tell students that they will practice being geologists today. Ask them to repeat the term altogether, once or twice. Describe that a geologist is someone who studies rocks. 2. Model the sort. Prompt student thinking by describing the process. Show how the rocks can be sorted a variety of ways. Challenge students to think of as many different ways to sort them as they can. 3. Pass out the bags or rocks. Have students examine the rocks and sort them 2-3 ways for 10 minutes. 4. Whole group: Ask students how they sorted the rocks. Ask what features they noticed about the rocks. 5. Closure: Ask students how they practice being geologists today. Student Actions: 1. Students will explore a variety of rocks at their tables independently. Students will use loupes to look closely at the rocks and notice different characteristics. Students will sort the rocks 2-3 times. 2. Assessment: 1. Pass out student journals, writing prompts, and glue sticks. Have students draw and write how they sorted the rocks. 2. Remind students to list at least 2-3 characteristics
