Haas Writing 37 14 March 2014 A Womans Worth It is common for humans to change, both consciously and unconsciously because it is in our nature to change. Since the earliest of times, human have been susceptible to evolution. Charles Darwins theory, Natural Selection states that overtime, only certain [the strongest] species can adapt to the changes their environment goes through and ultimately survive the changes they face (Than 1). Context of a novel is similar to the idea of Natural Selection because authors need to be able to adjust their type of writing to fit the time period they are living in as well as the audience they are trying to reach. For example, Conan Doyle wrote his stories in London, England in 1886, therefore he wrote stories that were appropriate for his time. Hound of the Baskervilles was the third of the Sherlock Holmes novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and published in London of 1902. In the beginning of the story, Dr. Mortimer states his case about a legend concerning a huge demonic hound with flaming eyes and fangs that haunts the Baskerville family. The case itself has to do with the murder of Sir Charles Baskerville and how the next heir may be murdered as well. Watson goes to Baskerville Hall with the Baskerville heir to gather information by himself; meanwhile Holmes secretly works on the case. Holmes reveals that the murder was done by Mr. Stapleton, one of Charles Baskervilles neighbors; he then successfully stops Mr. Stapletons attempt at murdering Henry Baskerville and is able to dispel the myth of the Hound of the Baskervilles. Through the novel, you have women characters that are constantly told what to do and how to do it. The reason these women

Lopez 2 are written as pushovers in his novel is because Conan Doyle lived in a time period where women were considered second-class citizens. BBC claims that during the Victorian Era, a woman's place was in the home, as domesticity and motherhood. Some women in the Victorian Era believed this was true about them and that all they will be able to achieve is that. This way of thinking caused women to allow themselves to be mistreated.
