Specimen

A 2.5x2.5x1 cm encapsulated greyish nodule was removed from the scalp. Microscopic examination revealed a cyst lined with stratified squamous epithelium in the dermis containing keratin. The cyst was diagnosed as a pilar cyst.

SPECIMEN: Sebaceous cyst scalp CLINICAL DETAILS: NIL MACROSCOPIC: Encapsulated greyish nodule covered by hairy skin measuring 2.5*2.5*1 cm. Skin measures 3*1 cm. Cut surface shows a cyst containing yellowish material 6 bits DR.MK MICROSCOPIC: Section shows skin with a cyst in the dermis lined by stratified squamous epithelium exhibiting abrupt keratinization. The lumen contains amorphous keratin showing focal calcification. An area of haemorrhage and fibrosis is seen with associated cholesterol clefts and foamy macrophages. IMPRESSION: Pilar cyst
