a key signature gives the performer information about the collection of notes that will be used for a specific piece. a key signature can be found at the beginning of a piece between the clef and the time signature.

Rules about key signatures: 1.) a key signature can only have either ALL sharps or ALL flats. never a combination of sharps and flats 2.) each key signature has both a major and a minor key. they are called relative key signatures.

Key signatures using sharps... In ALL sharp keys this is the order of sharps. ALWAYS!!

Below is how to translate the key signature for sharps. 1 sharp = G major/E minor 2 sharps = D major/B minor *to find the major key go to 9 3 sharps = A major/F# minor the last sharp and then go up 4 sharps = E major/C# minor one half step. 5 sharps = B major/G# minor ex. if F# is the last sharp then 6 sharps = F# major/D# minor a half step above is G. The major 7 shrpsar = C# major/A# minor key is then G. *HINT: Fat Cats Get Down At Eddies Bar. a short phrase to remember the order of sharps.
