Author-Date/In-text Referencing
Definitive Resources available at the Reference and Information Services Desk on Haggard 2: th Chicago Manual of Style. 2010. 16 ed. Chicago: University of Chicago Press. (Ref. Z 253 .U69 2010) The following are examples of the more common citations. When in doubt your final word is the Chicago Manual of Style, the official website, and your professor. General Rule: When no author is available, begin the citation with the title of the article (book, etc). Section and page numbers for the Chicago Manual of Style are given for each example when available.

Periodicals (Journals, Magazines, and Newspapers)


Online Journal Article with DOI number

Online Journal Article without a DOI Number


15.9, p. 792 When an article does not have a DOI number, include a URL. This example has a stable URL from JSTOR. When there are four or more authors, include all authors in the reference list entry. Use only the first author in the in text entry followed by et al.

Magazine articles need not be included in a reference list when using this style. Magazine citations are usually done entirely within the text of the paper. The reference list example is given if required by your professor. Note that the year is separated from the month and date.

Online or Print Newspaper Article


14.206, p. 741; 15.47, p. 807 Like magazine articles news items from daily papers are rarely listed separately in a reference list when using this style. Newspaper citations are usually done entirely within the text. The reference list example is given if required by your professor. Articles from microforms are treated as you would a print article.

In Text: Without a Reference List Entry: John Kifner reported that he saw no indication of sniper fire (New York Times, May 5, 1970). Citing a Secondary Source


It is always best to use the original source. Ask for assistance at the Reference Desk in Haggard 2, when you need help locating an original work. It may be found in a collection or anthology or you may be able to get the resource through Summit or Interlibrary Loan. If an original source is not available, mention the original author and date in the text of your work, and cite the secondary source in the reference list. 15.52, p. 808
