Chess is a board game played between two players on a 64-square checkered board. Each player controls 16 pieces at the start: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The objective is to checkmate the opponent's king by placing it under attack and the king having no escape. Games can also end in a draw by agreement, stalemate, repetition of positions, or insufficient material to checkmate.
