CO2 Absorption Using Coconut Shell

The document discusses a study on using coconut shell as an adsorbent for removing carbon dioxide from natural gas. Coconut shell was chosen due to its porous structure and as it is an agricultural waste that reduces costs. The study involved producing coconut shell char at different furnace temperatures and analyzing its CO2 adsorption capacity based on factors like weight and size of the adsorbent. The optimum conditions were found to be coconut shell char burned at 500°C with a size of 106 μm, following Langmuir isotherm and pseudo second order kinetics. The conclusion is that coconut shell has potential as an inexpensive adsorbent for CO2 removal.

The Performance of Carbon Dioxide (CO 2) Adsorption Using Coconut Shell

SITI ATHIFAH BINTI MASHURI

INTRODUCTION
Adsorption has been widely used in many areas such as environmental and chemical processes. It also plays an important role in purify the gas in air pollution control and also removing the impurities in water purification. The adsorption process had been chosen for CO2 removal because of it can be highly cost effective, required less energy and less impact to the environment. Also there are many type of waste that can become the adsorbent such agricultural waste and food waste. In this study, coconut shell had been chosen as the adsorbent to study its capability for CO2 adsorption.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
The removal of exceed CO2 in the natural gas plant nowadays are using a commercial adsorbents such as activated carbon and zeolite. Therefore, the project was done to remove the exceed CO2 in the natural gas plant using coconut shell as char adsorbent. Coconut shell is being chosen as adsorbent because its a good carbon precursor and having a regular porous structure. Coconut shell is classified as the agricultural waste and this will reduce the cost of the process.

OBJECTIVE
i. ii. iii. iv. To produce char coconut shell at furnace temperatures 300oC, 400oC and 500oC. To characterize the coconut char in terms of carbon content using Elemental Analyzer. To study the capability of CO2 adsorption at weight 5g, 10g and 15g and size of adsorbent at 106m, 250m and 500m. To investigate the adsorption performance based on Langmuir isotherm, Psuedo First Order kinetic and Psuedo Second Order kinetic.

The optimum condition for this research is where the adsorbent burned at 500 oC with size 106 m The adsorption process follows the Langmuir isotherm It follow pseudo second order reaction Coconut shell can be used as an adsorbent for the adsorption process of CO2. This is because the coconut shell is easy to get and inexpensive.
