Lesson On Democracy
r example in the Ancient Greek city. All the Athenian men could speak as they wished about laws they may not like, or if they wanted to change something, which showed that they had an equal effect on the government. In order to do this, you had to be an Athenian citizen. To be one, you had to be 18 or over, and born in Athens.
To make this democracy go even further, they used a new type of government, called direct democracy. This meant that instead of every person having a straight impact on the government, they decided that only 500 important men should be chosen to have an impact on the laws. This was called the Council of 500. This was good and bad, because then no idea from those people was taken, and fewer ideas that were bad from the entire city could be passed, and it took less time because they would pick intelligent and worthy people. This could be good and bad, because the council could give good ideas, but if a person had a great idea, but wasnt in the council, then the government would not have access to it, which possibly could help save the civilization or make it better.
Soon in Rome, there became rich and poor people. No people in the middle, just rich and poor people. The rich and wealthy people were called the Patricians, which made up about 5-10% of the civilization. What made up the other 90-85% of the civilization, which were called the Plebeians. The plebeians were the lower class people, who did all of the work for the patricians. And instead of the plebeians getting more wealthy, they just kept on getting poorer and poorer, and the rich getting richer and richer. This
made the plebeians mad, because they were not getting what they deserved. The romans felt that they should be in the republic, so they started a fight, and then just left the city. This was called the conflict of orders, and this is how the roman patricians got more of what the wanted, and were more free, because the patricians had agreed on giving the patricians veto power because without the plebeians, they realized that they city would fall apart without their hard working. In 367 B.C.E, they finally let the plebeians become consuls. Now the plebeians could have more choice and money in the city.
