Unit Subject: Spelling-Words with a short vowel sound Grade Level: 3rd Grade Duration /Length: One week (Monday-Friday)/45 minute lessons Subject Learning objectives: Students will be able to use features of words (e.g., common word parts, sound/symbol relationships, and spelling patterns) to decode unknown words. Expand vocabulary Monday/Lesson 1 Lecture: Opening lecture consists of informing students that we will have a pre-test
Wednesday to see how they are coming along before the final test Friday. Informing the students there are 20 spelling words with 1 bonus word. I have created a cryptogram and a spelling list in Spanish in order to accommodate my Spanish speaking students. Students should study words nightly as homework in order to prepare for the test on Friday. To begin the class we will start with a spelling bee to see who may be able to sound out and put letters together better than some of the other students in class. This assessment will give me an idea of who may need to study more as well as those who might need extra help with spelling assignments in class. I would like to form four groups that will be divided into accelerated spellers, moderate spellers, beginning spellers, and non-English speaking spellers. Throughout the week students will study and work assignments in groups that are on the same academic level as themselves.

Assessments: Spelling Bee Activities: Whole class participation in a spelling bee lead by the teacher. Materials & Resources: Spelling list for each student Wrap-up/ Reflection: After the spelling bee I should have a good idea which students are
struggling with sounding out their words and not able to spell at grade level, I also will know which students seem to be stronger spellers. From this spelling bee I can plan spelling lessons accordingly for the week with my students strengths and
